An overview of the role of Brazilian agribusiness

Agribusiness is not limited to planting, harvesting or raising animals for food production and subsequent human consumption, although these practices are an integral part of the sector’s activities.

Therefore, it is important to understand the role of agribusiness as a whole. Thus, this term seeks to encompass the entire production chain of a variety of products, ranging from:

  • Cultivation of a range of crops.
  • Supply of fertilizers and other chemical products.
  • Manufacture of appropriate machinery.
  • Transport
  • processing and industrialization of certain items.
  • development of new technologies that allow expanding and improving all these processes.

In other words, with this, agribusiness is not restricted to what happens on the farm. At the same time that what is produced in the countryside feeds the city, many of the innovations that emerge in urban centers contribute to improving the processes of rural producers on different scales.

In Brazil, agribusiness appears as the main segment of the national economy. In recent decades, the sector has experienced unprecedented growth, also becoming an international reference, both in terms of production capacity and the adoption of new technologies and innovation tools.

Proof of this, for example, is the efficient development of crops that until then were not adapted to the climate of some areas of the country, such as soybeans. This only happened thanks to intensive investment in research, one of the pillars of Brazilian agribusiness.

Today, this product leads national agribusiness production and is the main national export product, giving Brazil the position of largest global producer of the grain, with frequent production records in each harvest. The expectation is that between 2020/2021, the amount harvested will reach 133.7 million tons.

As a result, Brazilian agribusiness stands out both in exports, bringing important financial resources to the country, and in domestic supply, providing food with the necessary quantity and quality, always at competitive prices. Without this, the specter of high inflation would haunt the pockets of Brazilian consumers more strongly.

The participation of the agro sector in the national GDP

The entire strength of national agribusiness can be translated into numbers. Even though the economy in 2021 continues to be intensely affected by the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, production in this sector remains strong, with a good share of the national GDP.

In 2020, in fact, agribusiness was the only sector that showed growth, according to the survey carried out by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Last year, this segment of the economy advanced 2% compared to 2019. Although it may seem small, the result is excellent, even more so when we take into account that the economy as a whole fell 4.1% in the same period.
